A Martial Arts Instructor’s Guide: How to Fit Your Blitz Mouthguard Perfectly

So, you’ve got your new Blitz “boil and bite” mouthguard. That’s a great first step. The next few minutes are the most important, as getting a perfect fit is the key to making it comfortable and, most importantly, effective.

A poorly fitted mouthguard is uncomfortable, won’t stay in, and offers very little protection.

At Kato Martial Arts, safety is our #1 priority. In fact, as part of our new safeguarding policy, mouthguards are now mandatory for all students participating in sparring. We’ve made this change because a well-fitted guard protects your teeth, jaw, and helps you train with more confidence.

We’ve seen hundreds of students (and parents!) struggle with this, so we’ve made this simple guide and video to help you get it right the first time.

Our very own Kato student and staff member, Diana, has helped us demonstrate the process in the video below!

Step-by-Step Fitting Instructions

Follow these 7 steps for a perfect fit:

  1. Prepare Your Water: Fill a suitable container (Kato cups coming soon! 😂) with boiling water from the kettle. Let it cool for 30 seconds.
  2. Soften the Guard: Place the gum shield into the hot water for exactly 30 seconds. Do not exceed this time. Try to make sure it’s fully submerged, then remove it with a spoon or other utensil.
  3. Cool & Drain: Let the gum shield cool and drain for at least 20 seconds. This is an important step to avoid burns!
  4. Mould (Part 1 – Bite & Suck): Place the gum shield carefully around your upper teeth. Bite down firmly (but not all the way through!) and suck in strongly, as if you’re trying to pull all the air and water out.
  5. Mould (Part 2 – Press): While still biting and sucking, use your fingers to press the outside edges of the gum shield firmly into your teeth and gums through your lips and cheeks. Continue this whole process (biting, sucking, and pressing) for 30 seconds.
  6. Set the Mould: Remove the guard and drop it immediately into a bowl of cold water. Let it sit for 20-30 seconds to harden and set the mould.
  7. Check the Fit: Your guard is now ready. Try it on. A well-fitted guard should stay in place, snug against your upper teeth, even when your mouth is open.

If it feels loose, don’t worry! You can simply repeat the process.

Troubleshooting

  • It’s still loose: Repeat all 7 steps. It usually works perfectly the second time.

A proper mouthguard is an essential piece of kit. By following these steps, you’ll have a safe, comfortable guard that will last.
