5 Things You Need to Know Before Your First Martial Arts Lesson

Walking into a dojo for the first time can feel a little intimidating. We get it! whether you are an adult looking to get back into fitness, or a parent looking for the right club for your child, you probably have a few questions.

And honestly? We love questions. It shows you care about finding the right environment.

To put your mind at ease, we’ve compiled the top 5 questions we get asked by new students at Kato Martial Arts in Hornchurch.

1. “What should I wear for my first lesson?”

The Short Answer: Something comfortable!

The Details: You don’t need a uniform (Gi) to try a class. For your first free trial, just wear loose, comfortable clothing like jogging bottoms and a t-shirt. Avoid zippers or buttons if possible, as these can be uncomfortable during warm-ups. We train barefoot, so you don’t even need to worry about fancy trainers!

Once you decide to join the Kato family, we’ll get you sorted with your official uniform.

2. “Am I fit enough to start?”

The Short Answer: Yes. Martial arts is how you get fit, not something you need to be fit for to start.

The Details: This is the number one worry for adult beginners. Please don’t feel like you need to “get in shape” before you walk through our doors. Our classes are designed to let you work at your own pace. You will build stamina, flexibility, and strength naturally as you train. Everyone starts somewhere!

3. “Am I too old to start?”

The Short Answer: Definitely not.

The Details: Martial arts is a personal journey, not a race. We have students of all ages, from 4 years old to adults in their 40s, 50s, and beyond. Whether you want to earn a black belt or just stay active and mobile, the best time to start is today. Our senior classes are supportive, respectful, and adapted for adults.

4. “Will martial arts make my child more aggressive?”

The Short Answer: No. It actually teaches them to be calmer and more disciplined.

The Details: We teach that martial arts is for protection, not aggression. By channeling a child’s energy into structured movement, they learn self-control and respect. We teach our students specifically when not to use their skills. A confident child doesn’t feel the need to prove themselves on the playground. They have the self-assurance to walk away from conflict, knowing they can defend themselves if they absolutely have to.

5. “Will my child get hurt?”

The Short Answer: Safety is our number one priority.

The Details: We are a proud BMABA ‘School of Excellence’, which means we adhere to the highest national standards for safety.

  • Controlled Environment: We don’t just let kids fight. Techniques are taught step-by-step in a controlled way.

  • Safety Gear: We have strict rules on protective equipment. For example, professionally fitted mouthguards are mandatory for all sparring activities.

  • Qualified Instructors: Our team is trained to ensure every student practices safely and respectfully.
